Biography

Carole S. Brazeau - "Bringing stone to life"

Carole is a sculptor of highly detailed and life-like soapstone sculptures. She lives in Rockland, Ontario, Canada where she works out of her home studio/workshop. Her busy life is balanced between raising her young family (three children), drawing and carving out her visions.

A great influence and source of inspiration in Carole's life has been her mother, Françoise Brazeau (Ferguson), a successful landscape and portrait artist. As a child she accompanied her on “paint-outs” and exhibitions and was thus able to nurture her own creative skills.

Carole is self-taught. In her early years, drawing and painting were primary outlets for her creativity, but even as a young artist, she was drawn to the solid form - soapstone.

Her sculptures reflect her passion for arctic wildlife and mammals. Carole loves and respects the Native and Inuit art of her homeland. Devoting her life to carving much like the great Inuit and Indian artists of our time has been a long time dream of hers.

She has had the privilege of working along side "Kitchi Musko", a James Bay Cree from Constance Lake First Nation. Kitchi’s teachings support the notion that "life, whether animate or inanimate is sacred and should be treated with respect" and that “all beings are connected to ‘animate’ and ‘inanimate’ within this great circle of life". Carole is able to capture the "spirit" and "essence of life" into each piece she creates.

Carole is recognized as an accomplished artist by her peers and in her community. She is a member of Arts Ottawa East (AOE), Visual Art Centre, Orleans (VACO) and the Ottawa Art Association (OAO) She participated in many group exhibitions.

Carole’s sculptures are frequently sought out and/or commissioned to be given as corporate gifts by individuals traveling abroad on business.

Carole also carves jewelry out of the harder soapstone, (artic char or chlorite). She facilitates workshops and gives private carving lessons. Lastly, she is a distributor and has available for purchase a wide variety of soapstone: Artic char, alabaster, chlorite, African wonder stone, Brazilian, Québec, Jade, Serpentine, Black Pearl (from Northern Ontario), etc.
